Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at my preliminary task, I think I have improved Dramatically. I think this is due to the fact that I have learned to use a lot of new technology's that have helped me improve for my main task.
For example I have learned to use Photoshop and I am now proficient. That helped me the most with my main task because when I was doing my preliminary task, I did not know how to use Photoshop and had to use software that could not give me all of the tools I needed; Microsoft Publisher. I also rushed my preliminary task, meaning it did not look professional. I learned from this and spent a lot more time on my main magazine and it came out looking more professional than my preliminary task.

I have leaned many things in the process of making my magazine. The most important being making sure the font is suitable. For example, in my preliminary front cover the white font against the window is particularly difficult to read. I combated this by adding boxes to the back of fonts. The font choice itself is a major choice. The correct font could make a magazine and really flesh it out.
Using Photoshop is vital when trying to create a proffesional looking magazine. The magic wand and quick select tool were essential in making this magazine aesthetically pleasing. I used them over a dozen times throughout the production of my magazine from the main image on the front cover, to the pull quote on my double page spread.

Who would be the target audience for your magazine?
My target audience is a wide one. I am mainly aiming at older
people due to the genre of the magazine being an old genre. However, I am
trying to reach out to a younger, teenage target audience. I intend to do this
through the use of Jack Sinatra, the bad boy of blues. This would attract young
males. However, I do not want to limit my target audience to males. To try and
combat this, I added an article about Cortney Dixon to try and bring in a
female audience.

Front Cover Update 4
This will be my last update on my front cover. I still have to retake my picture to make it more suitable but other than that I am done.
In this session I finished the sub heading and added the essential info to the bar code. I also moved the bar code above my background so it is visible.

Front Cover Update 3
Since my last update I have added in my main cover line and added the box for my sub heading to go.
I have also added small line to my front cover just as guidelines to assure all of the boxes are lined up correctly. I will remove these on my final product.
Finally I decided to remove the Black & White overlay from my main image and I have replaced it with 2 overlays; One with -100 saturation at 30% opacity and one with -40 saturation at the same opacity. This will add a little bit of colour but will also allow for the old style to be recognized.

Front Cover Update 2
Since my last update I have added a placeholder picture in the background, added the bar code in the bottom right and also added a cover line with subheading to accompany it.
The cover line refers to the skyline as it says 'King'. The cover line is also a play on B.B King's name.
The photo in the background is black & white

Describe your idea for the brief:
My Idea is to fill my magazine with old Blues & Jazz because
it hasn't really been done to its full potential. It also doesn't attract to
the younger audience. I aim to change that.
|
Genre/ sub genre: list similar texts which
have inspired your thoughts
I have picked my genre of jazz and
blues because I think there is a gap in the market when it comes to this
genre of magazine. I have not seen any of its type on the shelf and I think
it is a real opportunity to capitalise on the growing interest of Jazz
|
Target audience: gender/ age/
characteristics/ behaviour
I aim this at all ages but hope to focus on teenagers-young
adults. This is because I think the youth of today need educated in what
music really is. I aim this mainly towards men but do not run women off.
|
Major conventions I will use
The main conventions that I will use will be the most important
conventions such as the masthead, cover line, main image and some of the
essentials such as the bar code, date and issue number and also price on my
front page, and for my context page I will use again a masthead and cover
line along with context boxes.
|
Conventions I
may subvert/ change/ not use
Other conventions I may use could be things such as a sky line and
bubble text box to help my magazine have a professional look and so that page
looks complete and not so boring and plain. However I do not want it too
look cluttered
|
Original images: what/ where/ who
For my image I was going to take a picture of my brother playing the piano. He will be wearing a suit and hat and it will be in black & white to simulate it being in the past. I will take this picture in my house next to a white wall for easy cropping. |
Potential difficulties/ Plan B:
The biggest difficulty for me is trying to find a target
audience, and which age I should aim it at. However I aim to make it
attractive to the younger generation.

Magazine Front Cover Update 1
This is my front cover so far. I have created my logo and skyline and have linked them both to the genre of my magazine.
Firstly I have made my logo in the style of the Blues Brothers logo because they are very significant stars in the blues genre. I have also included in my logo a very iconic microphone as it also links with the time period.
My Skyline will draw the target audience in as it includes a referance to B.B King; A very reputable artist.
